On 3 July 2026 Man Bahadur Karki, the sitting registrar of the Supreme Court, was nominated Chief Election Commissioner. Critics said moving a serving official straight into a constitutional body undermines the spirit of a cooling-off period. Former DIG and cyber-security expert Rajiv Subba and retired deputy government attorney Guru Wagle were nominated commissioners the same day.
