How many died in the Gen Z uprising? 72, 76 or 77?
Different figures for the uprising’s death toll circulate on social media and in the press. We compared the main sources.

Why do they differ?
- The count rose as injured people later died.
- Totals include not only protesters but also police personnel and prison inmates; sources count those caught in the second day’s arson differently.
- “Martyr” status is a government decision; it is not the total death toll.
Other facts
Police records show 2,642 rounds of live ammunition were fired over 8–9 September (Kathmandu Post, 26 September 2025). Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International both concluded that unlawful force was used.
Verdict
“76 dead” is the most common figure, but the official inquiry says 77. Any figure should say which source it uses and who is counted.
